Show of hands, who thinks client logins should require a password?

I’m strongly considering not requiring a password for client logins.

[EDIT]

In place of that, I’d like to have some sort of unique URL that auto-logs clients in if they receive an estimate or invoice email.

Client invoices can be sensitive (they show rates, which vary from client to client, turnover history etc) and I think clients would expect to use a password to login. Would this be optional?

On a related topic, when you log-out there is a Have any comments about Cashboard? screen. This is a good idea both for you and your users but I am concerned that some of my clients might use this screen to direct a comment or query to me and I wouldn’t know. Could comments to copied to us?

Cashboard gets better and better Seth and I get great feedback from my clients.

I tend to agree Seth, unless there is some unique way for the client access to be generated…it might be something that someone could misuse. T :)

RE: Logins / passwords
I originally thought the same thing about security, but to expand my thoughts a little…

It’s kind of a pain to require clients to remember a login and password just to pay you. I think that it’d be quicker for everyone if they could view their invoices with just one click from the emails that are generated.

Now since running Cashboard I’ve also come to realize that people get very private when dollar amounts are involved, so perhaps a preference might be warranted in this case.

As a lot of you know, I’m very anti-preference, but it’s great to have this discussion – which is why I threw it out there. Interested to hear more people’s thoughts on the subject…

For the record – I am not in favor of eliminating the password for client access. The information in this area is clients specific and the dollar amounts can vary depending on the client. I also happen to work with clients who compete with each other, so having them view information on each other would definitely not be good.

If you want to include it as a preference, I have no issue with that – it’s just not a preference I will choose to enable.

Comments screen
that’s brilliant Seth, thanks for enabling this so promptly.

Logins/Passwords
Is there an option using randomly generated unique URLs [http://user.cashboardapp.com/something_random] included in email advice of new invoice; then client simply clicks link. User admins might need the ability generate new random URL retiring previous one … just thinking aloud.

@jL

Yes, some sort of random, unique URL is along the lines of what I was thinking. I should have probably mentioned that in my initial post.

I love the idea of a unique url to automatically login a user. A password could still be in place, but a unique url would always be great for links in emails. My clients, don’t understand why they have to login to pay/view invoices/estimates. They just want to click and go. It would probably also help me get paid faster as they’d have to do less work. Also, they forget their password often.
