Cashboard rocks... bye bye FreshBooks???

(This is a combination of asking how to do something and requesting functionality—please excuse the scattershot approach ;) I signed up last night to demo Cashboard, and I really like what I’ve seen so far! I’ve been using FreshBooks for over a year but am getting tired of the slow pace of developing what I consider to be essential functions for my business. My biggest beef with FreshBooks is that they don’t have a good way to keep on top of my client accounts. There’s all sorts of bells and whistles when it comes to invoicing, but it’s a real hassle just keeping up with who owes me for what & whether or not I’ve invoiced them for time. I have lots of small clients, so keeping track of everyone can be a big time suck for my business. I really like Cashboard’s Overview page—it’s fantastic! With FreshBooks I’d have to dig around in 2 or 3 different reports to get the same info. A lot of my clients are small businesspeople and artists, so they can be a bit flaky when it comes to paying. Occasionally I have a client who doesn’t pay the entire invoice, only part of it. I created such an invoice in a test project in Cashboard, but I can’t figure out how to carry a balance over to the next invoice. I can see how apply overpayments, but not underpayments. I could send the old invoice again with a reminder to pay the balance, but I’d rather be able to pull the amount owed over to the next invoice as a line item called “past due amount” or something like that. Then when the client pays, the amount can be applied to any past due accounts. This is more of an account-focused rather than invoice-focused approach. In the same vein, I have read a couple of workarounds to deal with down payments and/or retainers. Wouldn’t it be better to make this easier to do, such as being able to add funds to a client’s account right from the Account Ledger screen? Again, focusing on the entire account, not just individual invoices. I’m going to spend some more time with Cashboard before I decide, but I think it has a ton of potential and may ultimately get me to switch from FreshBooks. However, a lot of that will depend on my ability to easily deal with client accounts, not just invoices. Thanks for your time. Best, Adrienne |

Welcome Adrienne, glad to see another convert to Cashboard :) Rolling invoice balances is an oft-requested feature and something that I really need to take a hard look at. I agree with your statements, and both of those items are on my top usability hitlist. Can’t promise a date on either of them, but they will be addressed sooner rather than later. |

Cool! I think I’ll tag along with y’all for a bit. I’m just now playing with editing templates… this is hot stuff for us designer-y types! Another thing that FreshBooks has simply ignored… |

This feature set is next in line for a major upgrade. |

We’re on the fence too for switching from Freshbooks to Cashboard. CB has some much needed features that FB lacks, but we have so much data in FB and FB is so familiar…. Hard decision. We have been using CB more and more. And I do love the transparency that CB has in development and the fast development pace. Hopefully Cashboard will keep getting better and we’ll be able to make the full switch to it eventually. |
